  1. NAS, SP13/2. Lacuna due to large hole in middle of document and a number of small surrounding tears. Five seal tags attached but seals do not survive. Back
  2. APS, i, 289, claims that two other copies of this MS survived, as seventeenth century transcripts. This is in error, arising from confusion with the Declaration of the Clergy (see 1309/2). The original is badly damaged. It appears in facsimile facing APS, i, 459. The translation provided here is by Dr. A. B. Scott. The editors would like to thank him for providing this text. Back
  3. Sources: BL MS Harl. 4694, f.5r-6r (A), BL MS Harl. 4694, f.35r-36r (B), NAS, State Papers, SP13/4 (C). For a full discussion of these MSS, see 1309/2 text. Another translation of the Declaration of the Clergy, and a full discussion of the backround to the creation of the four versions made in 1309-10 is to be found in A. A. M. Duncan, 'The Declarations of the Clergy, 1309-10', in G. W. S. Barrow (ed.) The Declaration of Arbroath: History, Significance, Setting (Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 2003), 32-49, 44-5.
