²Item, for polecy to be had within the realme in planting of woddis, making of heggeis,³ orchartis, yardis and sawing of browme, it is statute and ordanit be the kingis grace and his thre estatis of parliament that the actis maid tharupoune of befor be King James the Secund and utheris oure soverane lordis progenitouris be observit and kepit and putt to scharp executioune in all punctis, with this addicioune: that every man spirituale and temporale within this realme havand ane hundreth pund land of new extent be yeir, and may expend samekle, quhare thare is⁴ na woddis nor forestis, plant wod and forest and mak hedgis and hanyng for him self, extending to thre aikir of land, and abone or under as his heretage is mair or less in placis maist convenient; and that thai cause every tennent of thair landis that hes the samen in tak and assedacioune to plant upoune thare onsett yerelie for every merk land ane tree, ilk lord of ane hundreth pund land under the pane of x lib. and less or mair efter the rait and quantite of thair landis;⁵ and that inquisitioune be maid yerelie herupoune as the kingis grace sall think maid expedient; and that every man begyn and cause planting to be maid the nixt sesoune herefter following under the panis forsaidis, to be raisit and inbrocht to the kingis grace use be the schireff of the schire, or quham plesis his grace to directed his commissioune to in that part, and that cognitioune be tane yerlie of the brekaris of this statute be every schireff in his awne schyre⁶ yerlie at his heid court efter Pasche.⁷
