[Petition of Andrew Arnott, sometime of Barcaple, for the teinds of the parish of Tongland]

Petition Andro Arnot, sumtyme of Barcaple, anent the yythes of Tungland.

To the kingis moist excellent majestie, the humbill petitioun of Andro Arnot, sumtyme of Barcaple,

Humblie schaweth,

Whairas your majesties petitioner and his predecessoris be the space of tua hundreth yeiris or thairby, being kyndlie takismen and possessoris of the viccerage teyndis of the parochin of Tungland for yeirlie peyment to the bischopis of Galloway of the soumes of fourtie pundis Scottis, as the takis maid thairupone proportis; and your majesties petitionar having be the space of aucht yeiris sence or thairby agret with umquhill Andro, bischope of Galloway for the tyme, for ane new tak to have been grantit be him to your majesties said petitioner of the saidis viccarage teyndis for the space of 19 yeiris for yeerlie payment of the said soume of fourtie pundis, and he, having causit his wryttar draw up the forsaid tak conforme to the forsaid agreement, and your majesties petitioner being in the meantyme unjustlie incarcerat in waird within the tolbuthe of Kirkcudbright be sume malicious personis, trew it is that Maistir James Scott, minister at Tungland, the tyme of your majestie petitioner, his said imprisonment, purchest ane tak of the saidis viccarage teyndis fra the said umquhill bischope of Galloway, notwithstanding of the forsaid agreement past betuixt him and your majestie said petitioners, whairby he wes unjustlie secludit and debarrit fra the right of the saidis teyndis. Lykeas thaireftir be the space of [...], the said Maistir James Scott, being excommunicat be the kirk and having fled the cuntrie for not subscryving of the covenant, the saidis teyndis hes continwallie lyne over sensyne unpayit in the handis of the parochinaris of Tungland. And your majesties petitioner being now redacted to extreame necessitie and povertie by the tyrannie and oppressioun of dyvers personis whair he duellis and not abill thairby to prosequte his just and laufull actionis against his credituris and utheris be quhom he is unjustlie wrongit and opprest, and being of great age, will be utterlie ruinat and undone unles your majesties out of your roiall bountie and favour be pleasit to grant to him during his lyf tyme new takes of the saidis viccerage teyndis of the said parochin of Tungland (quhilk is no pairt of the ministeris stipend at the said kirk nor nevir wes) for payment of the old dewtie thairof abovespecifit, and to assigne him to the byrunes of the saidis teyndis, having speciall consideratioun that he is unjustlie secludit fra the richt and possessioun of the saidis teyndis in maner forsaid.

May it thairfoir pleas your majestie to grant new takes to your majesties petitioner during his lyftime of the forsaidis viccarage teyndis of the said parochin of Tungland for peyment of the foirsaid old dewtie thairof, and to assigne him to the byrunes of the saidis teyndis, having speciall consideratioun that he is unjustlie secludit fra the right and possessione of the saidis teyndis in maner forsaid. And your majesties petitioner sall evir as bund in dewtie pray for your majesties happie and prosperous rigne etc.

His sacred majestie is graciously pleased to remitt this petitioner to be hard and considered in parliament.
