Protestation of the town of Edinburgh against ratification of the wrights of the Canongate

In the parliament held at Edinburgh, 17 November 1641, the which day James Cochrane, merchant burgess of Edinburgh and commissioner to this present parliament for the said burgh, in name and on behalf of the provost, bailies, council and community of the said burgh of Edinburgh, protested in open and plain parliament in audience of the king's majesty and estates of parliament that the ratification of the date hereof granted by the king's majesty and estates of this present parliament in favour of the wrights and coopers in the Canongate and their pendicles, mentioned in their seal of cause and charter specified in the foresaid ratification, should be always without prejudice to the said provost, bailies, council and community of the burgh of Edinburgh and their successors of their rights, infeftments, liberties and privileges of the regality of the Canongate, as having only right to the same regality, which rights are now ratified in their favour in this present parliament, and also without prejudice to the said burgh of Edinburgh as being a free burgh royal and of their whole liberties, privileges and freedom granted and pertaining thereto. And likewise that the foresaid ratification granted in favour of the wrights and coopers in the Canongate should be always without prejudice of the acts of parliament made in favour of the burghs royal and made against the exercise of trades and crafts in the suburbs adjacent to the said burghs royal. And also protested that the seal of cause and charter specified in the said ratification be always without prejudice to the said town of Edinburgh of their rights, liberties and privileges foresaid, and of the acts of parliament made in favour of the free burghs royal of this kingdom, and in respect hereof the said James Cochrane, commissioner foresaid, in name of the said burgh of Edinburgh, protested against the foresaid ratification granted in favour of the wrights and coopers in the Canongate, and hereupon, in name and on behalf of the provost, bailies, council and community of the burgh of Edinburgh, in audience of his majesty and estates of parliament, asked act and instruments.
