Ratification to [John Leslie], earl of Rothes
Our sovereign lord and estates of parliament ratify and approve the gift of pension made, given and granted by our sovereign lord the king's majesty, with advice and consent of his highness's treasurers, comptrollers and collectors, and treasurers of his majesty's new augmentations, principal and depute, and other lords of his majesty's exchequer, his highness's commissioners, to and in favour of John, earl of Rothes, his heirs and assignees, of all and whole a yearly pension of £10,000 Scots money yearly, to be taken up at two terms in the year, Whitsunday [May/June] and Martinmas [11 November] by equal portions, out of the readiest of his majesty's rents, customs, casualties, and duties of his majesty's treasury, comptrollership and collectory or new augmentations or patrimony of this realm, or any of them, and that yearly and each year during the space of his natural life next after his entry thereto, which is ordained to be and begin by the said letter at the feast and term of Martinmas last in this instant year of God 1641 and so forth yearly and termly thereafter, during the space foresaid. And for more sure payment of the said pension yearly and each year during the space foresaid, his majesty, with advice foresaid, by the said letter has assigned and conveyed to the said John, earl of Rothes, his heirs and assignees as much of the first and readiest of the duties of his majesty's customs and imposts of wines coming into this his highness's kingdom of Scotland as will extend to satisfy and pay the said John, earl of Rothes's said pension yearly and termly during the said space of his natural life above-specified, in manner at length specified in his highness's said letters of gift under his majesty's privy seal of the date at Holyroodhouse, 23 September last, at more length bears, in all and sundry the heads, points, clauses, articles, circumstances and conditions contained therein, and after the form and tenor thereof in all points. And our said sovereign lord and estates of parliament will, grant, decree and ordain that the said letters of pension and this present ratification thereof is and shall be a valid and sufficient right to the said John, earl of Rothes for possessing, enjoying and taking up the said pension yearly and each year during his said lifetime, according thereto in all points, without any obstacle, impediment or objection to be made, proposed or alleged in the contrary. Likewise our sovereign lord and estates of parliament decree and declare this present ratification to be as valid, effectual and sufficient to the said John, earl of Rothes and his foresaids for possessing and uplifting of the foresaid pension above-mentioned as if the same letter of gift and pension were inserted at length word by word in this present ratification thereof, concerning which his majesty and estates of parliament has dispensed and hereby dispense for ever.
