Order: the creation of the Earl of Leven
Order of the creation of [Alexander Leslie of Balgonie], lord general, to Earl of Leven
The which day, in presence of the king's majesty sitting in plain parliament, compeared personally General Alexander Leslie of Balgonie, clothed in parliamentary robes, accompanied by [James Stewart], duke of Lennox, [Alexander Montgomery], earl of Eglinton and [Charles Seton, earl of] Dunfermline, also clothed in their robes, with all solemnities of trumpets, heralds and others ordinary in such cases, a patent of the earldom of Leven and lordship of Balgonie granted to the said General Leslie and his male heirs lawfully procreated of his own body was publicly read by the clerk of the parliament in audience of the king and parliament, and thereafter the same patent was convoyed by [John Elphinstone, lord Balmerino], lord president of the parliament, to his majesty sitting upon the throne, and the king's majesty delivered the foresaid patent to the said lord general after he had sworn the oath accustomed, and thereafter the king's majesty put the crown of an earl upon his head.
