Charter: to John of Islay, lord of the Isles, of the lands which were Alan son of Rauridh's

Robert by the grace of God, etc. To all etc. Know that we have given, granted and confirmed by this our present charter to our beloved son John of Islay [lord of the Isles] all and singular the three-hundred merks [worth of] land which were the late Alan son of Rauridh² within our kingdom, namely the lands of Moydart, Arisaig, Morar, Knoydart, Uist, Barra, Rum, Eigg and St Kilda, with the pertinents, both in the regions of the isles and in the great land. To be held and had by the same John, his heirs and his assignees, of us and our heirs, in fee and heritage, by all their rightful boundaries and divisions, with all and singular their liberties, profits, easements and lawful pertinents whatsoever pertaining to the said lands or which may pertain in any way in future, as freely, quietly, fully, integrally and honourably in and by all ways as the said late Alan son of Rauridh in any way as freely, quietly, fully and honourably lawfully held or possessed them at any time. The aforesaid John and his heirs making to us and our heirs the services owed and customary concerning the aforesaid lands with the pertinents. In testimony of which matter we instructed our seal to be appended to our present charter. Witnesses, etc. At Scone at the time of our parliament held in the same place on 9 March in the second year of our reign [1372].
