Procedure: the estates' bond of loyalty to James VI
Quhilkis being opinlie red, the saidis lordis of secreit counsall, utheris of the nobilitie, prelattis, baronis and commissaris of burrowis convenit as said is, is gladlie aggreit thairto, allowit and apprevit the samyn, and in verificatioun and testificatioun thairof, subscrivit the obligatioun following:

2We, quhilkis hes subscrivit this underwritten band, understanding that the quenis majestie, willing na thing mair ernistlie nor that in hir liftyme hir maist deare sone, oure native prince, be placeit and inaugurat in the kingdome of this his native cuntre and realme, and be obeyit as king be us and utheris his subjectis, and being weryit of the greit panis and travellis takin be hir in hir governament, hes be hir lettres dimittit and renunceit and gevin power thairby to dimit and renunce the said governament of this realme, lieges and subjectis thairof, in favouris of hir said sone, our native prince, to the effect he may be inaugurat thairin, the croun royall put upoun his heid, and be obeyit in all thingis as king and native prince thairof, as hir hienes lettres past thairupoun beris. Thairfoir, and becaus it is ane of the maist happy thingis that can cum to ony peopill or cuntre to be governit and rewlit be thair awin native king, we, and ilkane of us, quhilkis hes subscrivit thir presentis, be the tennour heirof, promittis, bindis and obleissis us faythfullie to convene and assembill oure selffis at the burgh of Striveling, or ony uther place to be appointit, to the effect foirsaid, and thair concur, assist and fortifie oure said native king and prince to the establissing, planting and placeing of him in his kingdome, and putting of the croun royall thairof upoun his heid; and in the feir of oure God, being instructit and techeit be his and all uther lawis, sall gif oure ayth of fidelitie for homage and detfull obedience to be maid be us to him during his grace’s liftyme, as it becumis faythfull, Cristiane and trew subjectis to do to thair native king and prince. And forder, that we sall, with all oure strenth and forceis, promote, concur, fortifie and assist to the promotioun and establissing of him in his kingdome and governament, as becumis faythfull and trew subjectis to thair prince, and to resist all sic as wald oppone thame thairto, or mak ony troubill or impediment to him thairin, and sall do all uther thingis that becumis faythfull and Cristiane subjectis to do thair native king and prince. In witnes of the quhilk thing we have subscrivit thir presentis with oure handis, at Edinburgh, the [...] day of […], the yeir of God jM vC thre scoir sevin yeris.3
