2Protestation made by [William Douglas], earl of Angus regarding his priority and place in parliament
The which day, in presence of the estates of this present parliament, compeared personally William, earl of Angus, lord Douglas, Abernethy, and asked instruments that he sat and sits in the first place and foremost seat of the temporal estate of this realm, according to the ancient rights and privileges thereof granted by our sovereign lord and his most noble progenitors to him and his predecessors; and protested that whatsoever person or persons of the said temporal estate should give their votes before him in this present parliament, their votes should in no way be prejudicial to him, nor his successors in the peaceable possessing and enjoying in all time coming of whatsoever privileges, honours and dignities held and possessed by him and his predecessors in time bygone, and namely in the bearing of the crown, the vanguard in battles and in the first place and first vote of the said temporal estate in all parliaments and councils, but that he and his successors may possess and enjoy the same in all time coming according to the said rights granted to him and his predecessors thereupon of before.
