Charter: of erection

The said charter of erection, being ordered to be recorded in the books of parliament, is of the following tenor.

[Charter of erection for commissioner to Campbeltown]

[The 236th act of the 15th parliament of James VI sought to extend government into the Highlands by establishing three separate burghs there, one in Kintyre, one in Lochaber and one on Lewis. The present earl of Argyll would like Campbeltown in Kintyre to be erected into a royal burgh, and so, in consultation with [Patrick Hume], earl of Marchmont, lord chancellor, [James Douglas], duke of Queensberry, [Archibald Campbell], earl of Argyll, [William Johnston], earl of Annandale, Adam Cockburn of Ormiston, treasurer depute, and Francis Montgomery of Giffen, King William has granted a charter of erection to Campbeltown as requested, creating it a royal burgh, with all the relevant, attendant and usual privileges of trade and markets etc. Witnessed by [Charles Hamilton Douglas], earl of Selkirk, Sir John Maxwell of Pollok and Sir Charles Kerr, at Kensington, 19 April 1700.]

Written to the great seal and registered 4 June 1700. Signed thus, Duncan Ronald, depute. Sealed at Edinburgh, 5 June 1700.
