Act and remit in favour of the late bishop of the Isles

At Edinburgh, 12 July 1695, anent the draft of an act given in and presented to his majesty's high commissioner and the estates of parliament by Archibald [Graham], late bishop of the Isles, as is after deduced: Our sovereign lord, considering that several of the inhabitants within the bounds of the bishopric of the Isles are hitherto deficient in payment to Archibald, late bishop of the Isles, and John Graham of Dougalston, as deriving right from him of the revenue of the said bishopric, and that, by reason of the distance and inaccessibleness of the bounds of the said bishopric, legal diligence is rendered ineffectual for bringing in thereof, therefore, his majesty, with advice and consent of the estates of parliament, statutes and ordains that military assistance shall be given to the said Archibald, late bishop of the Isles and John Graham of Dougalston, or their factors, to quarter for what of the said revenues is justly resting to the said bishop, upon such as are liable in payment thereof, (the same being always first constituted against them by legal sentences) and that in the same manner as quartering is allowed by law for cess and public dues, or to be assisting to the poinding and caption to be used therefore; and appoints the commander in chief to order the said assistance and that it be used on the charges of the persons liable in payment. Upon reading of which act his majesty's high commissioner and the said estates of parliament did upon the day and date of this act recommend and hereby recommend to the lords of privy council to fall upon such methods as might make the payment of the above dues effectual upon the charges of the persons liable in payment.
