†The which day Alexander [Seton], earl of Dunf[ermline, lord high chancellor] of Scotland, produced and exhibited to the [the nobility and council] presently convened the king's majesty's first mis[sive and proposition] directed to the lords of his majesty's pri[vy council regarding a volun]tary contribution to be granted for defen[ce of the Palatinate, being] the dowry of his majesty's dearest daught[er and patrimony of his majesty's] grandchildren. As also he produced [...] copy of the letter written and directed from the [nobility and council] present for the time to his majesty in answer to his majesty's letter aforesaid, and in like manner he produced his majesty's missive letter written back again to the said lords in answer to the letter aforesaid directed to his majesty from his said nobility and council. Which three letters being all read in the said lords' audience and duly considered by them, the said lord chancellor proposed to the convention the equity, expediency and necessity of his majesty's desire. And sundry of the nobility and councillors being desired to deliver their opinions, which faithfully was done by them, and after some time spent [in this]† way, it was universally thought best that some 12 or 14 of greatest judgement and experience should convene upon the morning thereafter to advise upon the best and readiest means to give to his majesty most real contentment. Whereupon the lord chancellor and [John Erskine, earl of Mar], treasurer, [John Spottiswood], archbishop of St Andrews and [James Law, archbishop of] Glasgow, [William Douglas], earl of Angus, [William Douglas, earl of] Morton, [Robert Maxwell, earl of] Nithsdale, [Robert Ker, earl of] Roxburghe, [James Ogilvy], lord Ogilvy, [David Murray, lord] Scone, [William Cranston, lord] Cranston and [David Carnegie, lord] Carnegie [of Kinnaird], and [Patrick Forbes], bishop of Aberdeen and [Patrick Lindsay, bishop of] Ross (without excluding such others of the nobility as please to come) were nominated and appointed to that effect and they were ordained to report their opinions to the public meeting tomorrow, 26 January.
