Forasmuch as certain questions and controversies have lately arisen between [George Home, earl of Dunbar], his majesty's high treasurer, [Sir James Hay of Kingask], comptroller, and [Sir Thomas Hamilton of Binning], advocate for his majesty's interest, and [George Gledstanes], archbishop of St Andrews concerning the estates of bastards, right to customs, cockets, forbidden goods and confiscation thereof, and the said Archbishop of St Andrews being altogether unwilling that his name shall ever be opposite to his majesty or his right, or to contend for any such matter which his majesty in his great wisdom shall not think and judge due and lawful to the said archbishop to possess, therefore the said reverend father in God, George, archbishop of St Andrews, compearing personally in presence of [George Keith, earl Marischal], his majesty's high commissioner of parliament, and lords of articles of this kingdom, humbly, voluntarily and freely submitted and by the tenor hereof freely, voluntarily and humbly submits himself to his majesty's judgement in the premises, and is content and consents that his majesty judge, pronounce and determine finally therein at any time between now and the [...] day of [...] next, faithfully promising, binding and obliging himself and his successors to abide at, obey and fulfil whatsoever his majesty shall be pleased to determine in the premises, and therewith humbly requests at the hands of so just and gracious a king and master does expect, that his majesty will be pleased to hear him in the qualification of his particular rights in the said matters controverted before his majesty pronounce decreet therein, likewise his majesty's officers above-named most humbly crave and do expect that his majesty will [be]† pleased to hear their true declaration and information of his majesty's right and interest in the matters above-specified; as also the said archbishop, for him and his successors, consents and is content that the decreet to be pronounced and given forth by his majesty in the premises shall be registered in the books of parliament and have the strength, effect and execution of an act and decreet of parliament.
