Procedure: preamble

The parliament of the most excellent prince James VI, king of Scots, held in Edinburgh on 30 May in the year of the Lord 1594, by our said supreme lord the king and all the estates of the realm, together with George [Keith], earl Marischal, William Henderson, constable depute, Robert Stewart, sheriff depute of Edinburgh, and James Nisbet, dempster.

Judicial proceeding: summons of treason

The which day, in presence of the king's majesty and whole estates of parliament, the said Masters David MacGill [of Cranstoun-Riddel] and John Skene [of Curriehill], advocates to our sovereign lord, of new produced the said summons of treason raised at the instance of our said sovereign lord against the said earls [George Gordon, earl of] Huntly, [William Douglas, earl of] Angus and [Francis Hay, earl of] Erroll and [Sir Patrick Gordon], laird of Auchindoun for certain crimes of treason specified in the said summons raised thereupon. The which three earls and the laird of Auchindoun were thrice called at the tolbooth window and none of them compeared to answered to the said summons of treason. Thereafter the said advocates produced of new, in presence of the king's majesty and estates, the said Robert Fraser and John Blindseil, messengers, the said George Grieve and Henry Bell, John Finlayson and George Cunningham, witnesses to the foresaid executions of the said summons of treason, and made faith that they were executed as the same bears, as they did and verified the same executions upon 20 May instant; and thereupon the said advocates asked instruments.

Procedure: diets of the lords of the articles; submission of business

The king's majesty and estates of parliament ordain the lords of articles to convene tomorrow at 8 o'clock in the morning, and to convene every day thereafter, and to sit until 6 o'clock in the evening in the over tolbooth of Edinburgh. And ordain all our sovereign lord's lieges to present their supplications to the clerk register within three days, that he may read and present them to the said lords of articles and receive answers thereof as appropriate.
