And that letters be directed charging all and sundry earls, lords, barons, freeholders, gentlemen, landed men with the inhabitants of burghs, as well as within regality as royalty, within the bounds of the sheriffdoms of Forfar, Fife, Perth, Kinross, Clackmannan, Stirling, Dunbarton, Bute and Argyll, that they and each one of them well equipped with arms in fear of war, likewise with 20 days' victuals and provision, address themselves to meet Ludovic [Stewart], duke of Lennox, earl of Darnley, lord Tarbolton, Methven and d'Aubigny, his highness's lieutenant at Stirling, upon the said 1 November next to come, therefrom to pass forward, as they shall be commanded and directed, for invasion, pursuit and punishment of the rebellious and contemptuous persons, inhabitants of the highlands and countries adjacent thereto, perturbers of the common quietness of the realm, under the pain of loss of life, lands and goods.
