†Our sovereign lord and estates of this present parliament decree and declare that it shall be permissible to all towns and parishioners to landward where markets of before were kept and held upon the Sabbath day (being now prohibited by the law of God and laws of this realm so to continue) to elect and choose any other day in the week for holding of the said markets within the said towns and at landward kirks where they were accustomed to have markets of before (not being the market day of the next burgh), and there to buy and sell provisions and such other commodities as were used upon the Sabbath day without stop or impediment, always without prejudice of the right and liberties of his highness's free burghs; and that letters be directed hereupon if need be in forms as appropriate.

†Our sovereign lord and estates, remembering the late civil troubles within this realm, and that for pacifying thereof there has been sundry good constitutions and acts of parliament made and set down, such as the act of pacification concluded at Perth in the month of February 1572 [1573], thereafter ratified in the parliament held at Holyroodhouse in the month of April 1573, the act of abolition in the parliament held at Linlithgow in the month of December 1585, and the act made in the parliament held at Edinburgh in the month of July 1587, ratifying the foresaid acts of pacification and abolition, which whole acts and constitutions were only made and granted in favour of such persons who profess the true religion as the same is presently professed within this realm and that have acknowledged our said sovereign lord and highness's authority; and to the effect that the benefit and commodity of the said acts be not extended in favour of any person or persons who profess not the true religion as the same is presently professed within this realm, and has not acknowledged our said sovereign lord and his highness's authority, therefore our said sovereign lord, with advice and consent of his said estates and whole body of this present parliament, finds, decrees and declares that the foresaid act of pacification made and concluded at Perth and ratified thereafter in parliament as said is, the act of abolition made at Linlithgow in the month of December 1585, and the act made in the parliament held at Edinburgh in the month of July 1587, ratifying the said acts with the whole supplements made thereto, are only extended and made in favour of such persons who profess the true religion as the same is presently professed within this realm and have acknowledged his highness's authority; and that no person nor persons who were forfeited, convicted of barratry or who lost their benefices or pensions ipso facto may be heard to seek the benefit of the said acts or any of them or to use any restitution or ratification thereof, before that they profess the true religion as the same is presently professed within this realm and acknowledge our said sovereign lord and his authority; and this act to be extended not only against all persons who have been forfeited, convicted of barratry and lost their benefices ipso facto at any times before the date hereof, but also to all persons that shall happen at any time hereafter to be forfeited, convicted of barratry or lawfully lose their benefices and pensions.
