At a meeting held on this date, contained within the privy council register, the king, with the 'advise of his esteatis and counsall presentlie convenit', issues an order for fencible men to accompany him to the Borders with England to suppress certain rebellious subjects. No attendance data survives, thus it is not clear whether the use of the term 'estates' indicates that all three estates were present. See RPCS, first series, iv, 284-6 for the proceedings of this council or convention.

An order contained within the privy council register on 27 July 1588 makes reference to the 'esteatis presentlie assembled', implying that this meeting should perhaps be considered as something other than an ordinary gathering of the privy council. However, there are no representatives of the burghs in attendance and the meeting is rather sparsely attended for a convention of estates. A second order passed the same day as the first contrarily states 'the king, with advice of his council', rather than estates, indicating that the use of the term in the first order should be treated with considerable caution. It should also be noted that the business conducted at this meeting is typically privy council in nature. See RPCS, first series, iv, 298-303 for the proceedings of this council or convention.
