The quhilk day oure soverane lord, with consent and avise of the thrie estaitis of this present parliament, hes ratefeit, apprevit, confermit and allowit and, be thir presentis, ratefeis, approvis and allowis the discharge, exoneratioun and declaratioun following grantit, maid and gevin to Alexander Erskin of Gogar in maner efter following, and all and sindry pointis, past, clauses, articles and conditiones contenit thairintill, and hes interponit and interponis thair auctoritie thairto sua that the said Alexander may bruik and joyis in all tyme cuming the haill privilegeis and commoditeis specifiit in the said discharge, exoneratioun and declaratioun, efter the forme and tenor heirof; and ordanis the same exoneratioun and declaratioun, with the acquittance and discharge of James, than erle of Arrane, gevin upoun the ressait of the castell of Edinburgh, to be heir insert ad futuram rei memoriam:
James, be the grace of God, king of Scottis, to all and sindrie our liegis, subjectis and utheris quhome it effeiris, greting. Forsamekle as we and the lordis of oure secreit counsale, having perfite knawlege be guid pruiff and experience that oure castell of Edinburgh, being commit to the charge and custodie of our weilbelovit and trusty servitour, Alexander Erskin of Gogar, hes bene faithfully, suirlie and diligentlie keipit be him, and that he hes done his honorable, trew, thankfull service and dewetie to us in the keping and custodie thairof sen the first comitting of the samin to him, but ony reproche or offence to be laid to his charge in onyways thairanet; and alsua we and the saidis lordis of oure secreit counsale acknawlege and confess that we haif ressavit fra the said Alexander our said castell and all and sindrie oure jowellis, movables and munitionis and utheris thingis quhatsumevir ressavit be the said Alexander thairin at the first ressait thairof, or thaireftir in his tyme in onywys pertening to us, quhairfoir we, with advise and consent of the saidis lordis of oure secreit counsale, be the tennour heirof, exoner, quietclame the said Alexander, his deputis, servandis, thair airis, executouris and assignais of thair intromissioun with our said castell, munitionis and utheris thingis quhatsumevir ressavit be him or ony thame thairin in ony tyme bigane, befoir the dait heirof; and siclyke we and the saidis lordis of oure secreit counsale, be the tennour heirof, declaris that nathir the said Alexander nor ony of his deputis, under keiparis, servitouris and officiaris in oure said castell hes committit ony cryme or offence quhatsumevir that in onyways may be laid to his or ony of thair chairges for neglecting of thair office and dewetie in keping of the said castell, munitiones, servandis, presonaris or ony uther thingis quhatsumevir committit to thair keiping thairin, or for non fulfilling of ony chargeis or command gevin to him or ony of thame be us or ony utheris having oure power in ony tyme bigane; and thairfoir, with advise foirsaid, quietclame and discharge him and ilk ane of thame thairof, and sall nevir move, clame nor persew actioun or caus aganis him or ony of thame thairfoir in onywys in tyme cuming, bot renunceis for us and oure successouris all instance and actioun we had, hes or may haif aganis thame or ony of thame for the samin for now and evir, be thir presentis. Attoure, thir presentis being produceit in oure parliament, we sall the samin be ratefeit and apprevit by the thrie estaitis thairof in all pointis. Given under our greit seill and subscrivit be us and the saidis lordis of oure secreit counsale at Falkland, the tent day of August and of oure reignne the auchtene yeir 1584. At Edinburgh Castell, the aucht day of August the yeir of God jM vC lxxxiiij yeiris, Alexander Erskin of Gogar, captain of the castell of Edinburgh, randerit and reallie and with effect deliverit to the noble and michtie lord James, erle of Arrane, lord Avane and Hamiltoun, speciallie constitute be the kingis majestie to the effect underwrittin, his hienes castell of Edinburgh foirsaid, with the munitionis, artallieren, insicht, plenissingis, jowellis and movables being thairintill, quhairof the particular comptis, alsweill of the chargeis as dischargeis, remanis and ar extant in the handis of the maister and comptrollar of his hienes ordinance and of the maister of his majesteis gardroppe, his hienes umquhile thesaurair and his deputis or utheris havand cuir and commissioun of the saidis artalliery, jowallis and movables, quhilk was not speceallie committit to the said Alexander Erskin, bot onlie the castell house and veschellis quhairin the same war ordanit to be keipit and preservit; and thairfoir, the Erle of Arrane, in name of oure soverane lord, and being auctorizit be his hienes speceall power and comissioun grantit him to haif ressavit fra the said Alexander Erskin the said castell of Edinburgh, munitiones, artallierie, insycht, plenishing and movables being thairintill, in maner befoir specifiet and according to the power and aucthoritie of his comissioun grantit be our soverane lord to the effect underwritten, exoneris, quitclames and dischargis him, his aires and executouris of the samin castell, munitionis, artallierie, insycht, plenissingis and movables foirsaidis being thairin, for now and evir, and oblissit him to procure and deliver to the said Alexander and his aires sufficient exoneratioun and discharge of oure soverane lord, with advise of his estaitis in parliament, nixt to be haldin upoun the premise in dew and competent forme as effeiris, with protectioun and securitie to him and his servandis in sic forme as he sall think meet and require.
