Legislation: ratification of the abstinence of war

To the right excellent prince John [Stewart], duke of Albany, earl of March, Mar and Garioch, lord of Annandale and Man, legitimate tutor to our sovereign lord the king's grace, governor and protector of his realm. We, the underwritten, spiritual and temporal and burgh commissioners, representing the three estates of Scotland, honour, fidelity and service the abstinence of war passed and concluded by your grace for the part of this realm, and by the most reverend [Thomas Wolsey], archbishop of York, chancellor and cardinal of England, legate of the apostolic see, in the name of the right high, right excellent and mighty Prince Henry [Tudor], king of England, and under his highness's great seal ratified, to endure and to be observed from the feast of St Andrew in winter [30 November], the year of God 1516, until the same feast of St Andrew following next thereafter in the year of God 1517, read, seen and fully understood by us, and now prorogated and continued from the said feast of St Andrews in November next to come [1517] until the same St Andrew's Day at the said season in the year of God 1519, making of new prorogation two years complete, in consideration that the royal authority of this realm through the minority of our sovereign is in your hands as tutor and immediate successor to the king and crown, and the the full and liberal administration in all and sundry matters concerning the king and his realm is deferred by election of the whole body of this realm to your administration and in parliament by the authority of the three estates, in which you have so used yourself, touching the said tutelage and government of our sovereign lord, his realm and commonwealth thereof, both within this realm and outwith the same, that we hold and repute the authority royal in all things well exercised, and especially the foresaid prorogation of war passed, concluded and approved formally as said is, and for our part confess that we are obliged to the observation of the same abstinence and prorogation thereof taken, treated and concorded by your grace, having the power and royal authority of this realm, and shall observe and keep the same in all and sundry articles and points contained in that matter. And in token of this our consent and obliging in this matter, we, of superabundance, have affixed to this document our seals at Edinburgh, 7 October 1517.
