[King James etc. With the advice, authority, counsel and consent of John [Stewart], duke of Albany, protector and governor, etc., and the mature deliberation and decreet of the three estates, the king appoints his trusted kinsmen and counsellors Andrew [Forman], archbishop of St Andrews, primate, legate a latere, James [Beaton], archbishop of Glasgow, chancellor, Archibald [Douglas], earl of Angus, lord Douglas, Alexander [Gordon], earl of Huntly, lord Badenoch, James [Hamilton], earl of Arran, lord Hamilton, Colin [Campbell], earl of Argyll, lord Campbell and Lorne, Antoine d'Arces, sieur de la Bastie, baron of Ferreris, lieutenant of the East March, as vice-regents and lieutenants of the kingdom, in all its bounds, prayerfully and solemnly chosen by Albany and the three estates [to act] in his absence. Giving the vice-regents and lieutenants, or three of them, one of them always being the chancellor, power to rule and govern in all ways, including war with England, rebellion, justice and issuing laws, under our seals, with power to appoint casualties, fill vacant offices, accept resignations and appoint justiciars and all other officers. Holding everything they do in the foregoing as pleasing, all lieges are commanded to obey the vice-regents under all pain. Under the great seal with the signet of Albany.
