Legislation: rehabilitation of John of Islay, lord of the Isles

That day the same most excellent prince - at the singular and express requests of the most illustrious lady Margaret, the queen, and of the aforesaid three estates of the realm, and with their express consent, assent and deliberation - restored and rehabilitated John of Islay, formerly earl of Ross and Lord of the Isles - forfeited and [sentenced] to lose his life for his treasonable crimes in the lord king's parliament held and begun at the said burgh on 27 November [14]65, [and] whose lands, revenues, possessions, superiorities and offices, with pertinents, and all his moveable and immoveable goods, [were] confiscated and applied to the use and profit of our same lord the king, his successors and assignees heritably in perpetuity - to his honours, life, fame and dignity, and by royal authority restored him, and decreed that he be restored and rehabilitated, to his former estate in all things concerning the person of the said John.

On which day the same John of Islay, personally appearing before our same lord the king and the three estates of the realm - by his pure and spontaneous will - surrendered and - purely, simply and of his own will - resigned from himself and his heirs and assignees to our same lord the king and his successors in perpetuity, the earldom of Ross with pertinents, tenements, tenandries and services of freeholders, with pertinents; all and sundry the lands of Knapdale and Kintyre with pertinents, tenements, tenandries and services of freeholders; the office of sheriff of Inverness and Nairn, with all and sundry their other pertinents, [and] their castles and fortalices; and all right, claim, property and possession of the same, which the same John or his predecessors have, had or used to have. On which day also the same most illustrious prince approved and ratified all the grant and gift of lands lying in the earldom of Ross previously made by his royal majesty to Elizabeth [Livingstone], countess of Ross, notwithstanding the abovewritten revocation. Notary: Alexander Scott.

On which day also the same most illustrious prince made, constituted, created, nominated and caused to be named by heralds, John of the Isles a baron-banrent and lord of his parliament.

Also on the same day, the same most illustrious prince, with the consent, assent and deliberation of the said three estates of the realm, united, annexed and perpetually incorporated the said earldom of Ross, with pertinents, to his heirs and successors, and to the royal crown, so that it will not be permitted for his royal majesty, his heirs or successors, in any manner to alienate, divide or dismember the said earldom, with pertinents; saving that the king, his heirs and successors may, at the pleasure of any of them, give and grant the said earldom, with pertinents, to one of his or their second-born [sons] legitimately procreated between them and a queen, their consort.
