Non-parliamentary record: charter recording the creation of the lordship of Hamilton in parliament (abstract)

James, etc., greeting. With the mature deliberation of our parliament held at Edinburgh on 28 June, we have granted and confirmed by this charted to our beloved kinsman Sir James [Hamilton] lord of Hamilton, the lands of the baronies of Cadzow and Machan and the superiority of the lands of Hamilton Farm and the lands of Corsbaskat in the sheriffdom of Lanark and barony of Kinneil in the sheriffdom of Linlithgow. Which lands were James's hereditarily, and which he resigned into our hands in our parliament, [with us] sitting in royal garment and majesty on the platform, in the presence of the three estates, and quitclaimed all right for himself and his heirs in perpetuity. And we created, annexed and united the baronies, lands and superiority into a free and integral lordship, to be called the lordship of Hamilton. And James's manor, now known as the Orchard, in the barony of Cadzow, shall be the principal messuage of all the baronies, superiority and lands, and of all the lordship, and shall be called Hamilton. And we create and name James a hereditary lord of parliament. James holding all the baronies, etc., as formerly he held of us in chief as baron of Kilbride, of us in fee and heritage in perpetuity, with all rights, etc., as freely as James or any predecessor held the barony of Kilbride before the resignation. Making the due and customary service to us, and saving to us and our heirs the rights and services of the baronies, superiority and lands of the lordship of Hamilton customary before the resignation.
