Edward, by the grace of God king of Scotland, to all those to whom these present letters come, greeting. Knowing how our most excellent prince and our most dear lord and cousin, Edward [III], by the grace of God, king of England, lord of Ireland and duke of Aquitaine, has granted and obliged himself and his heirs to help and maintain, at his costage and expense, us and our heirs in our realm of Scotland against all those who would like to make war or seize or oust us from the right to our same realm by force, each time that he or his heirs will be required by us or our heirs, we for this reason and for the great good, help and honour that our said most dear lord and cousin has made to us before this time, from the assent of the prelates, earls, barons, knights and all others assembled at our parliament summoned at Edinburgh on the octave of the Purification of Our Lady [9 February] in the year of grace 1334, according to the calendar of the church of Rome, and second year of our reign, grant and oblige us [and] our heirs to the said king of England and to his heirs to come in person with all our power and at our costage and expense, to the body of our said lord, the king of England, and the bodies of his heirs in the realm of England and lands of Wales and Ireland, for his and his heirs assistance against all those who would make war against our said lord the king of England and his heirs, or by force deny their rights to the realm and lands, each time that we or our heirs shall be required by the said king of England and his heirs for furnishing for six months, according to the way the business demands. In witness of these things we have made these our letters patent. Given at Edinburgh in our said parliament, 12 February, the year of grace and of our reign abovewritten.
