[A1662/5/7]*[print] [email] [cite] [preceding] [following]
To the lord commissioner, his grace, and the right honourable estates of parliament, the humble supplication of Nicolas† Gladstones, lawful daughter to the deceased Doctor Alexander Gladstones, archdean of St Andrews.
Shows,
That the petitioner's deceased father, being called and lawfully admitted archdean of St Andrews did, as became him in his station, carry himself very faithfully and loyally for his majesty's interest, and did advance the same so far as lay in his power; for which he was by those who prevailed in power for the time not only most maliciously thrust from his charge, but also in the year 1638 was forced to take exile upon him, and went into England where he lived a long time in great hardship, having left behind him his wife, family and small children. Whereby the petitioner's deceased father's sufferings were exceedingly great, besides the want of two years' stipend which was owing him the time he was thrust from his charge; and seeing the king's majesty has been graciously pleased to appoint that the widows and children of such ministers as have suffered for their loyalty should have some allowance out of the vacant stipends towards the reparation of their sufferings, may it therefore please your grace and lords to take the petitioner's deceased father's sufferings, which was merely upon the account of his loyalty, to your lords' consideration, and appoint such a sum to be paid to her out of the first and readiest of the vacant stipends as your grace and lords shall think fit and as may be in some measure suitable to the sufferings of her said deceased father. And the petitioner shall ever pray etc.
Edinburgh, 13 August 1662
The lords of the articles having considered the supplication above-written, it is their humble opinion that the sum of £100 sterling should be paid to the petitioner out of the first and readiest of the vacant stipends.
15 August 1662
The lord commissioner and estates of parliament approve this report and ordain an act to be drawn accordingly.
[William Cunningham, earl of] Glencairn, chancellor, in the presence of the lords of parliament
The estates of parliament taking into consideration the great sufferings of the deceased Doctor Alexander Gladstones, archdean of St Andrews, for his affection and loyalty to the king's majesty and the royal interest; and that for the same he was maliciously thrust from his charge in the year 1638 and banished from the kingdom, therefore the king's majesty, with advice and consent of the estates of parliament, modifies and appoints the sum of £100 sterling to be paid to Barbara Gladstones, lawful daughter to the deceased Doctor Alexander Gladstones, out of the first and readiest of the vacant stipends, and ordains the collector of the vacant stipends to make payment to her of the same accordingly.
