Procedure: protests as to precedence
Protestations of the nobility and others for precedency

In the presence of his majesty's commissioner and estates of parliament [William Douglas], lord Mordington protested that the absence of [James Douglas], marquis of Douglas from this parliament, in regard of his minority and other pressing occasions, should not prejudice his right to carry the crown and have the first voice in all subsequent parliaments.

[John Gordon], earl of Sutherland protested that the calling and enrolling of him according to the rolls of this parliament should not be prejudicial to him in subsequent parliaments of his right and precedency due to him.

[John Erskine], earl of Mar protested in the same manner.

[James Murray], earl of Tullibardine protested in name of [John Murray], earl of Atholl that the calling of the said earl of Atholl according to the rolls of this parliament should be without prejudice to him in subsequent parliaments and otherwise of the place and precedency due to him conforming to his rights.

The earls [David Wemyss, earl of] Wemyss and [Gavin Dalzell, earl of] Carnwath for themselves and [James Johnston], earl of Annandale, in name of the earls [William Crichton, earl of] Dumfries and [James Douglas, earl of] Queensberry, protested that the calling and enrolling of them after [John Campbell], earl of Loudoun should not prejudice them of their right and precedency before him, they being earls and taking the place as earls several years while the earl of Loudoun was lord and took place as a lord.

[John Hamilton], earl of Haddington protested, in name of [James Ogilvy], earl of Airlie, that the calling and enrolling of the earl of Airlie after [James Ogilvy], earl of Findlater at this time shall be without prejudice of the earl of Airlie's precedency before him conforming to his right.

[James Livingstone], earl of Callander protested that he might be called and enrolled before [Alexander Leslie], earl of Leven conforming to the date of his patent, which is prior to the earl of Leven's, and [John Leslie], earl of Rothes, in name of the earl of Leven, protested to the contrary.

[Alan Cathcart], lord Cathcart and [Hugh Fraser, lord Fraser of] Lovat protested that the calling and enrolling of [William Douglas], lord Mordington before them should not be prejudicial to their right of precedency before him.

The commissioners of the shires of Fife and Perth protested that the calling and enrolling of the shire of Edinburgh before their shires should not be prejudicial to them of their precedency.

The commissioner of the shire of Clackmannan protested that the calling and enrolling of that shire at this time should be without prejudice of their right of precedency in time coming as appropriate.

Sir John Urquhart of Cromarty protested that there not being of a commissioner from the sheriffdom of Cromarty at this parliament shall not prejudice the shire of their right in sending commissioners to subsequent parliaments.

John Bell [of Hamilton Ferme] for the town of Glasgow and Alexander Cuthbert for the town of Inverness protested that they be not prejudiced of their precedency amongst the burghs by the rolls of this present parliament.
