On the first day of parliament

[Sermons given; oaths taken; exhibition of the honours]

After divine service, the sermons being made by Mr Robert Douglas and Mr David Dickson, thereafter William [Ker], now earl of Roxburghe subscribed the oath of parliament, the National Covenant and the Solemn League and Covenant.

[Archibald Campbell], lord marquis of Argyll asked instruments upon the production of the honours in face of parliament, namely: the crown, sceptre and sword, which were then delivered to [Arthur Erskine], laird of Scotscraig in name of [William Keith], earl Marischal.

The oath of parliament, being read, was taken by the whole members of parliament present.

[President of parliament elected; oaths taken; warrant granted concerning the prisoners from the north; continuation]

The acts anent the election of the president of parliament in 1641 and the other in 1647 read in parliament, and after reading [John Campbell], earl of Loudoun, lord chancellor, was elected and voted to preside in this session of parliament.

[John Hepburn], laird of Waughton, commissioner for East Lothian, took the oath of parliament and subscribed the said oath, the National Covenant and the Solemn League and Covenant.

Warrant given to the magistrates of Edinburgh to keep the prisoners in sure custody who came from the north until further order.

Ordain the next meeting of parliament to be tomorrow at 10 o'clock.
