Sederunt
The b[ishop] of Edinburgh prayed before the opening of the parliament.
Efter prayers the lo[rd] register read his royall hynes his commissione, and therefter gave the same to the lo[rd] privie seall, who delyvered it to his royall hynes upon his knie.
The rolls called and absents marked.
Protestans wer made for precedencie as followes, viz:
Therfor the parl[iament] was fenced by the lo[rd] register, wherupon the lo[rd] advocat tooke instruments.
His royall hynes did nominat the marq[uis] of Athol, lo[rd] privie seall, to be preces seing ther was no chanclar.
The oath of alledgeance and oath of parliament wer read by the lo[rd] register, all the members of parliament standing with uplifted hands and suearing therto.
The declaratione was subcribed be all the members present.
The king's letter to the parl[iament] was delyvered by his hynes to the preses, and by him to the lo[rd] register who read the same publictly; and it was read the 2nd tyme by Mr Alexander Gibsone.
The d[uke] of Hamiltone had a speach wherin he moved that the parl[iament] might direct a letter of thanks to his matie for his gracious letter to the parl[iament], which was seconded by the ar[ch]b[ishop] of St Andras and the e[arl] of Argyll; and which was accordingly ordered to be done.
Therefter his royall hynes had a speech [1.] for manteining the Protestant religione as it is now established by law; 2. for suppresing of conventicles; 3. for a supplea for that effect; 4. that the laws already made against them might have a dew course; [and] 5. that other good and wholsome lawes might be made for the well of the kingdome.
Therfor his royall hynes, haveing represented that it being the custome in former parl[iament]s to choise the members of the articles, therfor moved that the parl[iament] might proceid in ordor therto.
The d[uke] of Hamiltone moved that the act of parl[iament] 1663 anent the method prescryved for choiseing of the articles might be read, and that the parl[iament] might proceid efter the same method; and which act being publictly read, the method therin prescryved was accorded unto.
Therfor the clergie having reteired from the parl[iament] to the exchquer hous, they elected the ar[ch]b[ishop of] St Andreas preses and nominat the nobilite following for the articles, viz: the d[uke] of Hamilton, the marq[uis] of Montrose, earles of Argyll, Erroll, Marishell, Pearth, Dumfries and Queensberry.
The haill nobilite did also reteir from the parl[iament] to the inner session house (d[uke of] Hamiltone being preses). They elected the clergie following to be members of the articles, viz the ar[ch]b[ishop of] St Andras and Glasgow, the b[ishops] of Edinburgh, Dunkel, Ross, Brechen, Dumblane and Caithness.
Therefter the nobilitie who were elected by the clergie went to the exchquer house wher the clergie who wer elected by the nobilite wer. And the clergie and nobilite who were elected to be members of the articles did (the ar[ch]b[ishop] of St Andras being preses) elect the barrons following to be members of the articles, viz: lord president of the session, Lo[rd] Tarbet, Lo[rd] Colingtone, Lo[rd] Haddo, Sir George Lockhart, Setone of Touch, Sir William Sharp and Ogilvie of Boyn; and also elected the burrowes following, viz: the provest of Edinburgh, Aberdein, Stirling, Linlithgow, Glasgow and Montrose, and Mr John Eason, commissioner for St Andras, and William Duf, commissioner for Innernes. Therefter the clergie and nobilite returned to the parl[iament] and reported ther electione which was approven by the parl[iament]; and his royall hynes conjoyned with them the officers of state.
Therefter his royall hynes did nominat the members of double and debatable†elections as followes, viz: the b[ishops] of Edinburgh, Galloway and Murray; nobilities: the e[arl] of Mar, e[arl] of Airly and Lo[rd] Rosse; barrons: la[irds of] Pitmedden, Gordonstane, younger, and Sir Robert Dalzell; burrowes: Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow, together with the officers of state.
Therefter the comittee for double and debatable elections was ordeined to sitt on Frayday at 10 houres and the articles on Saturnday at 10 houres; and his royall hynes adjurned the parl[iament] to Moonday nixt at 10 houres.
The b[ishop] of Edinburgh prayed.
Nota: that at the end of the furmes wher the burrowes sitt, ther was a place erected wher the dutchess of Albaine and Lady Anna, his royall hynes daughter, with many other ladyes, did sitt the first day of the parl[iament], bot not there efter.
