Sheweth,
That your petitioners wer never erected in a burgh royall by his majestie, without which no place can be accounted a burgh royall, nor did they ever compt in exchecker or make ane eque as a burgh royall, nor in effect are they able to find persons to be magistrats, nor to bear any burden as a burgh royall; but the truth is that any priviledge they have is from the lairds of Balfour upon whose lands their houses are built and whose burgh of barony they are. Likeas, though they have been represented in some late parliaments, yet that wes only occasioned by the tumultuariness and rebellion of the late times, wheron some factious persons desireing to have votes did intise some of our inhabitants to come and sitt in parliament; and the present inhabitants being young men and new intrants, and till of late, yea within thir twenty dayes last, never haveing considered their predicessors rights, bot continued the course of these who formerly lived on these bounds; and since wee neither wer nor are yet able to continue a burgh royall and since wee have no erection to that effect, may it therefor please your grace and lords to declare that wee shall no more be burdened as a burgh royall, nor be obleidged to attend parliaments and publict conventione as such.

Sheweth,
That your petitioner being commissionat by the baillies, counsell, burgesses and inhabitants of the said burgh, upon the account of ther poor and indigent condition to which they are reduced by the late troubles and severall other accidents, to resign, renounce and overgive all and sundry the priviledges and immunities of a burgh royall granted be our soveraign lord the king's majestie and his maties royall ancestors in favors of the said burgh, with their charters and infeftments following therupon and all right they can pretend therby, in favors of his matie and his successors ad perpetuam remanentiam, so that the saids burgesses and inhabitants may be free of bearing any charge or burden with the rest of the royall burrowes in tyme comming. Conform to the commission granted to me for that effect heerwith exhibit, which is datted the nynteenth day of August, your petitioner, by virtue of the said commission, does with all humility and reverence resign, renounce and overgive the saids priviledges and immunities, with the charters and infeftments granted for that effect, in favors of his matie and his successors ad perpetuam remanentiam; and humblie craves his matie and estates of parliament may accept the said resignation, and declare the said burgh of Anstruther Wester free of bearing any burden or charge with the rest of the royall burrowes; and discharge all collectors from troubling the saids burgesses and inhabitants for any cess or publick burden to be imposed upon them as a royall burgh in tyme comming, your petitioner and the saids inhabitants being readdie and willing to pay all bygones.

Sheweth,
That wher the petitioner hes hereteblie belonging to him the toune and lands of Fergustoune Douglas, lyand within the parochine of Eister Kilpatrick and shireffdome of Dumbartane, neir to the churche of the said paroch; and in respect that the sameine lands ar ane place of publict resort, lying in the march betwixt the hie and loe lands, soe that it would be most advantagious and beneficiall to all his maties leidges in and about thes places if ther wer any fair or mercate erected in the said place wherby comerce might be keeped and interteined in buying and selling hors, nolt, sheepe, meall, malt, cloath, linning and wooll and such lyke comodities which ar the product of the countrie in thes places; that all persones repaireing therto may be sufficiently furnished according as they stand in neid, to the great incouragement of traffict and comerce within thes bounds, which lyes soe remott from any brughes royall that noe persone can pretend prejudice; may it therfor please your grace and lo[rds] to give and grant the petitioner and his successors in the forsaids lands the power and libertie of tuo faires to be keeped upon the ground of the saids lands, the one upon the first of May, the uther upon the tuentie one of October yeirly, togidder with such privieledges and customes as ar used in the lyke caices.

Shewes,
That it wer very convenient for comerce and trade and for the weill of the kingdom and subjects leiving and receiding within the lordship of Lorne that ther be twa fairs in the year at Clachan in Nather Lorne, being the petitioner's propperty, ane wpon the tenth day of May and the other wpon the tenth day of October yearly at the said place; which would be not only a great ease and advantadge to the haill shiriffdom of Argyll and other persones who resort to that place, bott lykwayes to the petitioner.
May it therfor please your grace and lo[rds] to passe ane act in this present parliament in favours of the said petitioner for keiping of the forsaids twa fair dayes yearly at the said Clachan in Nether Lorne, with power to the petitioner to wplift the caswalities and deuties of the saids fairs and to apply the samen to his oun use, and to doe what els is knowen to appertine to such persones as are priviledged for keiping yearly fairs. That the Kirktowne of Eglishame, lyeing within the shiriffedome of Ranfrew, pertaineing to your petitioner heritablie, being above six myles distant from any royall brugh and from any other place wher mercats or frie faires are keiped, and lyeing on the king's high way, is a most fitt and convenient place for keipeing of mercats for buyeing, retailleing and selleing of all kynd of waires and merchandice and others goods and commodities necessar for the countrey, soe that it will contribute verie mutch for the incurradgement of policie and merchandizeing and for the ease and advantage of the wholl leidges therabouts that ther were ane weiklie mercat established within the said towne of Eglishame upon each Tuesday, and ane frie fair upon the tuintie fourt day of Apryll yearlie.
May it therfor please your gr[ace] and lo[rds] to grant warrand for keiping of ane weiklie mercat within the said Kirktowne of Eglishame upon each Tuesday, and ane yearlie frie fair upon the said tuintie fourt day of Aprill yearlie, for buyeing, selleing, toppeing, retailleing and venteing of all kynd of merchand wares and other goods whatsomever, and with all priviledges, liberties and immunities used to be granted to weiklie mercats and frie faires. Sheweth,
That wher the toune of Dalkeith, lying in the shirreffdome of Edinburgh, and the toune of Langholme, lying in the lordship and regalitie of Esdaill and shirrefdome of [...]†, and lykewayes the toune of Cassiltoun, lyand in the lordship and regalitie of Liddisdaill and shirrefdome of Roxbrugh, perteaning to your petitioners, ly in such places of the cuntrey as that it wold be advantageous not only to these tounes bot also to the nixt adjacent places of the respective cuntries wher they ly that ther should be ane convenient number of faires appoynted therin, viz: besyd the fair day already granted to Dalkeith, which is holden yearlie upon the tenth of October, that ther should be tua mae added therto in the year, ane therof upon the last Tuesday of Appryll, and the nixt upon the second Tuesday of July yearlie. And lykewayes besyd the fair dayes already granted to Langholme, that ther should be tua more added therto in the year, ane therof upon the fyft of Appryll, and the uther upon the fyfteen day of July yearly. And also that ther should be thrie faires att Cassiltoun, which is fyfteen or sexteen myles distance from any burgh royall, the first therof upon the eighteen day of June, and the second upon the fourth day of September, and the thrid upon the [...]† day of October yearlie, and that ther should be ane weikly mercat holden att Cassiltoun upon Fryday. And incaice any of the saids faires shall happen to fall upon ane Sunday, that the samen be holden the day imediatly following.
May it therfor pleas your grace and lordships to give warrand for the saids respective yearly faires and weikly mercats to be holden att the saids respective places upon the severall tymes above written. And your grace and lordships ansr.

Wheras your petitioners hes pertaining to them heretibllie ane litle toun called the Redding, situat in ane muirish place lying within ther barronie of Polmont and within the shirreffdome of Stirling, and that it wold be verie advantagious for the countray adjacent thereto that there were weiklie mercats ilk moneth of June at the said toun for buying of sheip and lambs, and ane fair yeirlie in October therat for buying and selling of horse, nolt, sheip and cattell for serving of the countray about.
May it therefor pleise your g[race] and lo[rds] to grant to your petitioners, ther aires and successors at the said toun of Redding ane weiklie mercat upon each Wednesday in June, and ane yeirlie fair upon the last Wednesday of October, for buying and selling of the goods respective abovewrittin, with powar to your petitioners and ther forsaids to appoynt keipers of the saids weiklie mercats and yeirlie faire, and to uplift the customes therof and to applye the same to ther oun use. To the lord commissioner, his grace, and right honorable the lords of the articles, the humble petition of Alexander Robertsone of Strowan.
Sheweth,
That where the toune of Keandlochranoch, being thretty mylles distant or therby from any burgh royeall, so that the people living in and about that place are putt to great difficulty and expense to gett things necessar for their use and intertainment; and sieing that the same place lyes in the heart of the countrey, convenient for faires to be keeped by which the people of the countrey may be conveniently and at easie rates provyded with all necessars, and particularly horse, catle, goods and other commodities.
May it therfor pleas your grace and lords to grant order and warrand for tuo faires to be yearlie keeped at the said toune of Keanlochranoch, one therof to be keeped and held upon the last Tuesday of July, and the uther upon the first Tuesday of October; with warrand to the petitioner to cause make intimation theroff at the heid burghes of the shyre and paroch kirks theroff, that all persones concerned may get notice off the same; and with power to the petitioner to uplift the customes and other casualities used and wont in the like cases for his owin use. Sheweth,
That where the petitioner's lands doeth ly at a considerable distance from any burgh royall, whereby the inhabitants in and about these bounds ar put to greate trouble and expensses in the provyding of themselves with such things as ar necessarie for them; and seing the touns of Laecocke, at the kirk of Foules, alias Wester Foules, and Blackfoord in the barronie of Ogilvie doe ly most conveniently for having of weekly mercats and publike faires for the wse of the countrey where horse, ky, sheep and all other comodities necessar for these bounds may be brought to publike seall; may it therefor please your grace and lords to grant the ordor and warrand for weekly mercats to be keept and holden at the saids places of Laecocke and Blackfoord wpon Wednesday; and for holding of a faire yearly at the said Laecocke, alias Wester Foulles, wpon the eight of March, and ane other wpon the eight of August; as also for holding of ane faire yearly at the said place and toune of Blackfoord wpon the tuintie tuo day of Junii, with warrand to make intimation of the holding of the saids weekly mercats and publike faires at the mercate crosse of the head burgh of the shire and severall parish churches therof and otherwyse as is ordinar in the like caisse, and to have the ordinarie priviliges and customes of the saids faires. Showethe,
That whair at the toune and ferrie of Portencraige, pertaining heritablie to your petitiouner, lyand within the shirreffdome of Fyffe, ther is ane publict plaice of repair and resorte for all the king's lidges who travells upon all occationes betuixt the north places of Scotland and the citie of Edinburgh and wther plaices of the south and east cuntries; and seeing for the incuradgment and advantadge of those who dwell in and about the said toune and east ferrie, and not onlie for keeping commerce and tread amongest his maties leidges in those bounds, bot also that the inhabitants of the said toune and ferrie of Portoncraig may be the more inabled and incuradged to serve and suplie all straingeres and passingeres that travells that way, and that with all manner of comodaties whairof they shall stand in neid; so that it is most convenient and necessarie ther should be two yearlie faires at the said toune, the first therof one the first Tuisday of Junii, and the wther one the last Tuisday of October ilk yeare in all tyme coming; and that ane act of parlament warr maid and emitted givand full and frie pouer, privilidge and libertie to your petitiouner for the said two faires and all tolls and customes and wther casualities arrysing fra and knowin to belong to publict faires within this kingdome, to be received, intrometted with and uplifted by your petitiouneres and his successores in the said toune and lands for ther awine use, and to exerse all power, jurisdictione and priviledge granted or competent to any persone or persones for keeping ordor in publict, and attacting and punishing delinquents and trublsome persones within the samen att any tyme, and that conforme and according to the parlament's custome in the lyk caices.
May it therfoir please your graice and lo[rds], in consideratione of the premiss, to grant power and libertie to your petitiouner and his successores to the said toune for proclaming of the said publict fairs at the said toune one the forsaids dayes, and to ordaine all customes and wther proffeits aryseing therfra and pouer of jurisdictione compitent therto to be uplifted and exerceised by your petitiouner and his forsaids.
