The estates of parliament, haveing heard a supplication presented in name of the noblemen and gentlemen of the shirreffdome of Dumfreis, shewing that, forasmuch as in the begining of the late troubles it wes appointed be the generall orders of the tyme that each shire should enterteane some officers of fortune and provyde themselffs with armes, for the doeing whairof, the earle of Queinsberrie, the late earle of Hartfell and some other gentlemen, wer forced to borrow money and give their oune privat bonds which, being represented to the committie of estates in the yeer 1648, they gave warrand to the committie of war of the shire to take tryell of the bussines and of what moneys wes borrowed for the use aforsaid, and to lay a stent upon the shire for the same, which they went about, but the troubles in the yeer 1649 and therafter falling out made some stop in the bussines, so as ther is yet about tuelve thousand merks resting for which some of the petitioners are engadged be their privat suretys, and it being hard that they should be lyable for those moneys which wer employed for the publict use of the shyre and the shire not darring to stent or tax themselffs without publict warrand; humbly therfor, desyreing that the shire may be commandit to meit and lay on a proportionall tax on themselffs for freeing the petitioners of these moneys wherof they stand bund for the shire. Which being taken into consideration, the king's majestie, with advice and consent of his estates of parliament, gives heirby warrand to the shirreff or justices of peace of the shire of Dumfreis to conveen the heritors within the said shire for laying on of a proportionall stent amongst themselffs for payment of the sume abovewritten.
