At Edinburgh, the fifteen day of Februar jM vjC threescoir ane yeiris. The comissioneris of burrowis, taking to their consederation ane paper intitulat, To his majesties commissioner, the humble petition of Robert Tailzeor, Robert Rynold Hercules, and George Smyth, merchands in Monros, and in name and behalf of the merchads and inhabitants of the said burgh', together with twa referrences: the one of the comissioners for articles, the wither of the honorable estaitis of parliament thairupon, and haveing first indewored ane amicable agreement, thairefter heard the allegationes of bothe parties thairin interessed at great length, and haveing seriouslie debaited the samyn, thair humble opinion concerning the haill mater is that the differences and disordors anent the electione of magistrats within the said burgh did arys efter the yeir 1655 by some innovationis introduced in the election of deykins of craftis, to have voice in leiting and election of magistratis never formerlie authorized nor practeised in that burgh, whairby the saidis disorderis and differences does continew to this day, notwithstanding of severall petitionis and addressis maid be the merchands to the comissioners of burrowis frome tyme to tyme; and that the best remedie they can think wpon is that thos persones who were magistrats and counsallors in anno 1655 may be with all conveniencie restored and reponed to their respective offices and places which they injoyed and exerceisid the said yeir; and that all deykins that wer not authorized befoir the said innovation be discharged with this proviso: that the actis and commissionis emittit be the respective magestratis and counsall since that tyme may stand nevertheless in full force and effect (excepting in sua far as the samyn relates to the innovationis affoirsaid); and becaus severall of thes personis then in place hes since that tyme depairtit this lyf, it may be earnestlie recomendit to the persones now to be restored with the remanent counsall that, with all tendernes and cair, they mak choise of the most sober, discreit, loyall and faithfull persones within the burgh for filling up thes vacant places, whairby richteous judgment and peace may be preserved in the samyn, conforme to thair charter and withers rights.
