The estates of parliament, now presently conveened by his majesties' speciall warrand and authority, haveing heard, seen and considered a supplication presented unto them by the provest and baillies of the burgh of Wigtoun, shewing that the bridge called the Bischop's bridge, betuixt the ferrie of Crie and the burgh of Wigtoun, is now altogether decayed, and that therby the passingers comeing from Carleill to Port Patrick, or from Port Patrick to Carleill and all others that travell that way, are necessitat to goe tuelff mylls about, wheras if the said bridge wer repaired and upholden the passage that way would be more short and easie to the contentment and satisfaction of all passingers of the three kingdomes that have occasion to travell that way; thairfor, craveing that warrand might be granted to the saids magistrats and their successors to make up sufficiently the said bridge, and to uphold the same in tymecomeing and, for their so doeing, to warrand them to uplift from each horseman passing that way the summe of tuo shilling[s] Scots, and from each footman the summe of tuelff pennies Scots, which will tend much to the good of the passingers, howbeit to the small proffeit of the supplicants, as the said petition bears. [And this] together with ane report to the effect aftermentioned made and given in be the lords and others commissioners appointed for heareing of bills and trade, to whom the saids estates of parliament referred the consideration of the said supplication, and they therwith, being well and ryply advised, the estates of parliament aforsaid have approven and doe heirby approve the same report and therfor grants warrand to the saids magistrats and their successors to make up and uphold the said bridge sufficiently in tyme comeing and, for their so doeing, the saids estates of parliament doe fully authorize the saids magistrats and their successors to uplift from each horsman passing that way the summe of tuo shilling[s] Scots and from each footman the summe of tuelff pennies Scots money forsaid.
