To the king's most excellent matie, the heigh and honorable court of parliament, the supplication of the officers of the garison of Strivling
Sheweth,
That we have beene in garrisone these seven monethes past and have received only four monethis pay at 20 shill[ings] Scots per diem to a captain etc., which, although it had been dewly payed, could hardly affoorde necessary intertainment for the discharg of our dyet, wheras the rest of the forces have had their constant pay out of their quarteris. Lykwayes the hard intertainment of the souldiers is not to be forgotten (to say nothing of their scarcity of foode, somtimes laiking 3 dayes of their weikes allowance), bot being almost destitute of cloathing, and although some of them have been formerly hardly bred and could indure hardships als weill as others, yet dying upon dewty, not having so much as to defend them from the extreamity of the cold, yea, hardly to cover their naikedness. Wee are not unsensible of the great straite the kingdome is in and the unabillaty therof to beare the great burthings upon it, nather ar we desyring great things nor superfluities, bot necessary intertainment, such as may be inabled to discharge our dewtyes. Wherfore wee humbly present the premisses to your searious considerationes and disyers, that som effectuall course may be found for payment of the thre months pay dew for discharging our quarters, and lykwayes som settled way of intertainment for the present and futtur. The comittie of parliament for military effairis thinks fitt that the proportion imposed upon the toun of Aberdeen towards the payment of the officers of Stirling may be assigned and imployed for compleitting a sufficient number of cloathes to the sojers of that garisone.
