[Deposition of the earl of Montrose concerning the officers under his service]

Edinburgh, 18 Maii 1650

In presence of my Lord Burghley, laird [of] Hoptoun and George Porterfeild and lord advocat, who wer sent from the estates of parliament to examine James Grahame, the said James Graham depones and declares (being interogat) that Generall Ruthven (quhom he designed earle of Crauforde) had a comission from him to be his lieutenent generall in the carieing on of his warre in this kingdome, and that this Duke Hamiltoun was four monethis about the king in comptetition with him for his place of generall, and that ye earle of Callendar was in termes and dealling to be his leiuetenent generall, bot the difference was that the earle of Callendar wold have his comission from the king's majestie and he wold have had Callendar taking his comission from him; and that the Lord Ythan had takin on in the service and was to have comed to this kingdome if he, the said James Graham, had succeidit weill; and that my Lord Sinclar was once in termes with him anent this bissines bot fell aff againe; and that he had severall letteris of freindschip from Seafort and Amisfeild, bot nothing anent the ingadging with him in his bissines.
