The estates of parliament, now convened in this sixth session of the first triennial parliament by virtue of the last act of the last parliament held by his majesty and three estates in 1641, understanding that there was a signature passed under his majesty's hand of the lands and barony of Pentland, lying within the sheriffdom of Edinburgh, in favour of Mr John Cant of Lowrieston, his heirs and assignees upon the resignation of the late Sir Robert Spottiswood of Dunipace, knight, containing a new gift and a new union to be held of his majesty and his successors, containing likewise a tax duty to be paid for the lands and others aforesaid in time of ward and non-entry and a tax avail to be paid for the marriage of the heirs thereof when the same should happen, appointed to have been modified by the docket of the said signature by the commissioners of treasury and exchequer, as the said signature of the date at Doncaster, 11 July 1642 and docket thereof at length purport. And likewise understanding that Sir John Gibson of Alderston, knight, one of the ordinary clerks to the lords of council and session, has acquired not only the right of the lands and others aforesaid which was competent to the said Mr John Cant but also the right of the reversion thereof which was granted by the said Mr John Cant for redeeming the same from him, therefore, and for the true and faithful service done to his majesty and the said estates of parliament by the said Sir John Gibson, the said estates of parliament by this act ratify and approve the aforesaid signature which was subscribed by his majesty in favour of the said Mr John Cant and his aforesaids above-written in all points, and hereby recommend to his majesty's treasurers principal and depute and other lords and others of his highness's exchequer to pass and issue in exchequer the same signature in favour of the said Sir John Gibson, his heirs and assignees of the lands and others aforesaid, with the same taxed ward, and to fill up the duties appointed to be paid for the lands and others above-written in time of non-entry and the value of the marriage of the heirs thereof, with such a yearly duty and sum of money as the said lords and others of exchequer shall be pleased to modify, according to the aforesaid docket of the said signature which was issued under his majesty's hand in favour of the said Mr John Cant, who is author to the said Sir John Gibson and is named in the right of the lands and others aforesaid, for the which this act shall be a sufficient warrant.
