The estates of parliament, now convened in this sixth session of the first triennial parliament, having respect to the true and thankful service done to his majesty and to the country by James Blair, younger, merchant burgess of Irvine, and his predecessors, have ratified and approved and by the tenor hereof ratify and approve the gift granted by our sovereign lord the king's majesty under the privy seal of the date at Edinburgh, 21 November 1636, of the office of cocket clerkship within the whole bounds of the bailiary of Cunninghame to the said James Blair, younger, during all the days of his lifetime in all and sundry heads, articles, clauses, privileges and circumstances whatsoever specified and set down therein. And the said estates of parliament will, grant, declare, statute and ordain that the said James Blair, younger, shall peaceably and freely hold, enjoy and possess the aforesaid office of cocket clerkship within the bounds of the said bailiary of Cunninghame with all profits, casualties and duties whatsoever pertaining and belonging thereto of all ships, crayers, barks, boats, merchandise and others whatsoever, either imported or exported by whatsoever person or persons within the bounds above-written, as freely in all respects as any of his predecessors held and possessed the same in any time bygone, and that during all the days of the said James' lifetime, according to the tenor of the said gift without any stop, trouble or impediment to be made or moved in the contrary. And that this present general ratification of the said gift shall be of as great force, strength and effect to the said James Blair during his lifetime in all respects and conditions as if the same were at length word for word engrossed herein, dispensing forthwith and with all objections whatsoever that may or can be alleged in the contrary; and ordain this act to be published at the market cross of Irvine.
