Whereas the estates of parliament, presently convened by virtue of the last act of the last parliament held by his majesty and three estates in 1641, are informed that certain avaricious persons have presumed at their own hands to set up and keep markets for sale of their goods at such places as they please, and especially at Brighouse Knowe and other places thereabouts in prejudice of the town of Edinburgh and their market at the House of Muir without any lawful warrant, therefore the said estates of parliament require and hereby command heralds to pass and by open proclamation at the said Brighouse Knowe and other places needful to discharge all and whatsoever persons to keep any market places with their goods but at such places as are allowed by the laws of this kingdom, and especially that none presume to set up or keep any market at the said Brighouse Knowe or any other places of their own, but that they bring in their goods to the said House of the Muir as they will be answerable.
