The estates presently convened give hereby warrant and commission to [Archibald Campbell], marquis of Argyll, the earls [John Kennedy, earl of] Cassilis, [John Maitland, earl of] Lauderdale and [John Lindsay, earl of] Lindsay, the lords [Sir Thomas Hope of] Kerse, [Sir Archibald Johnston of] Wariston, [Sir Adam Hepburn of] Humbie, [Arthur Erskine of] Scotscraig, Thomas Durham, James Sword, Mr Robert Barclay, Mr Alexander Douglas, or to any seven of them, there being two of every estate present ([John Campbell, earl of Loudoun], chancellor, being supernumerary), to meet and convene at such times and places as they shall think fit, and to take trial and inquisition by oath of witnesses (whom they have power hereby to summon before them under the pain of horning) and by all other lawful means whether or not the earl of Traquair has behaved himself in such a quiet manner as may contribute well and most to the peace of the kingdom, and according to the act of parliament of 16 November 1641, and especially concerning his carriage in his journey to York, his accession to the cross petition and petition against the amity, and to take similar trial and inquisition whether or not the earl of Carnwath said to his majesty in opposition to the desires of the commissioners who went from this kingdom in January last, or similar words: 'Sir, it is a strange thing to see that they were not content to come into this kingdom to ruin you themselves, but they must also come in to assist this rebellion to ruin you here'. And, as the said commissioners shall find occasion upon depositions of witnesses or other trial, to give order for securing of parties either by caution or imprisonment as they shall think fit for the peace of the kingdom, and to report.
