The king's majesty present in parliament.

The parliament of the said most excellent prince Charles, by the grace of God, king of Scotland, England, France and Ireland and defender of the faith, held at Edinburgh on 17 August 1641 by the lord king himself and all the estates of the realm written below, along with the officers of parliament following, also [Gilbert Hay], earl of Erroll, constable, [William Keith], earl Marischal, marischal, and John White, dempster.

The suits having been called and the court fenced at last.

  1. Conventionally historians have considered the 15 July and 17 August 1641 sessions to be one and the same (see, for example, D. Stevenson, The Government under the Covenanters, 1637-1651 (Edinburgh, 1982), 174). However, as the record clearly states both the July and August meetings to be separate sessions, they have been edited as such here. Back
