To the quhilke day and place the parliament was prorogate be the last act of continowatione therof, daitted 15 Maii 1641.

Procedure: opening of session

Parliamentum dicti excellentissimi principis Caroli dei gratia Scotia, Anglia, Franciae et Hiberniae, regis fideique defensoris, haldine at Edinburghe be vertue of his majesties speciall indiction and authoritie be the estates of this kingdome, viz: the noblemen, the commissionaris for the barrons and the commissionaris for the burrowes eftirmentionat, unacum officiariis parliamenti, viz: the Erle of Kinghorne for the constable, and the Erle of Mar for the mershall, and Johne Whyte, dempster, present.

  1. Conventionally historians have considered the 15 July and 17 August 1641 sessions to be one and the same (see, for example, D. Stevenson, The Government under the Covenanters, 1637-1651 (Edinburgh, 1982), 174). However, as the record clearly states both the July and August meetings to be separate sessions, they have been edited as such here. Back
