Forsamekle as the kingis majestie is informed that divers childrene, bothe of noblemen and otheris his majesties naturall subjectis of this kingdomne, hes bene heirtofore send over into seminaries, colledgeis and otheris houses of popishe relligioun beyond sea and ar thair instructed, perswadit and strenthned in thair popishe errouris, whairthrow thay become not onlie corruptit and pervertit in relligioun, bot poisoned and infectit in thair dewtie and alledgeance to his majestie and alienated from thair naturall love and affectioun towardis thair cuntrey, whiche is so muche the more dangerous because the poisoun being infused into youthis and studentis as into new veshellis groweth in tyme into ane inveterat habite of malice aganis the present governament, as alsua that divers Jesuites and seminarie preistis hantis, frequentis and ar ressett in the houses of mony of his majesties subjectis of this kingdome and that thair is a daylie growthe and increase of papistis; and his majestie, knaweing the dangerous consequenceis that heirupoun may follow and being carefull to prevent the same and thairwithall being desireous that all his majesties goode subjectis may take notice of his majesties reddynes and constant resolutioun to manteyne the true relligioun profest and be law established in this kingdome and upoun all occasionis to suppres the contrarie, thairfore his majestie, with advise of the lordis of his secreit counsell, ordanis letters to be direct chargeing officiaris of armes to pas to the mercatt croceis of the heid burrowis of this kingdome and otheris placeis neidfull and thair be opin proclamatioun to mak publicatioun heirof, and to command and charge all the saidis childrene that befoir the first day of May nixttocome thay returne into this thair native cuntrey and conforme thameselffis to live in suche dewtie and obedience as becometh goode subjectis; and that thair parentis, tutouris, governouris and suche otheris as hes bene or ar faultie ather in sending, permitting or manteneing thame thair tak present ordour to recall thame home and to provide that thay be returned into this kingdome betuix and the day foirsaid under the pane of the uttermost severitie of his majesties justice to be extendit in that behalf and to be inflictit upoun thame. And sicklike to command, charge and inhibite that no bishop, preist or other persone haveing takin or whilk sall tak orderis by or under ony auctoritie or power deryved from the sea of Roome, whither he or thay be naturall borne subjectis or strangeris, do presoome to confer anie ecclesiasticall orderis or exercise ony ecclesiastiall functioun or jurisdictioun whatsomever towardis or upoun ony his majesties naturall borne subjectis of this kingdome. And likewayes to command and charge all and sindrie judgeis and justiceis to whome it appertenis to putt all his majesties lawis and statutes now standing in force aganis Jesuites, seminarie preistis and otheris haveing taikin orderis by anie auctoritie from the sea of Roome, being his majesties subjectis, to dew and full executioun aganis suche of thame as from and after the first day of Februar nixttocome salbe fundin in this kingdome, whilk day his majestie hes limit and prefixt for the uttermost tyme of thair depairtour. And sicklike to command, charge and inhibite all and sindrie his majesties leiges and subjectis that nane of thame presoome nor tak upoun hand after the said day to ressett, supplie, harbour, interteny, releive or conceale ony of the saidis Jesuites, seminarie preistis or otheris popishe preistis under the paneis provydit be his majesties lawis in that behalf, whilkis paneis salbe seveirlie inflictit upoun the offendaris without favour. And forder, to command and charge all his majesties subjectis of whatsoevir rank or degree to conforme thameselffis to the publict professioun of the trew relligioun, like as his majestie prohibitis the exercise of ony contrair professioun under the panes contenit in the lawis and statutes maid thairanent, and to command and charge all archibishoppis and bishoppis in thair severall dioceyis to proceid aganis all suche as ar knawne to be of a contrair professioun according to the lawis of the churche and realme.
