To his grace her maties high commissioner and the right honorable the estates of parliament, the petition of Lieutennent James Smith
Humbly sheweth,
That where your petitioner hath served these several yeares bygone as ensign and lieutennent in the garrison of the castle of Edinburgh, during which time there is due to me of arrears the sum of one hundered and ten pound sterling, conform to the particular accompt thereof attested by Captain James Coult in the said castle of Edinburgh herewith produced, and it being just and reasonable that your petitioner be payed of what is due to him by the publick, for, having no other meanes of subsistance for myselfe and family and the small credit I had being now failed, I am not only under legal distresses at the instance of my rigid creditors but also under a heavy pressure of present want.
May it therfore please your grace and lords to consider my caice, which is at present very hard, and to appoint my payment to be made out of any fond your grace and lords shall think fitt, at least to remitt my caice to the honorable commission that they may ordor my payment.
And your grace and lords petitioner shall ever pray.

I, Captain James Coult in the castle of Edinburgh do hereby declare that the forsaid moneths are due to James Smith in the different capacities of ensign and leiuetennent in the castle of Edinburgh. Writtin and signed in the said castle, 23rd March 1704. Sic subscribitur, James Coult.
