Act and remit in favour of the synod of Argyll

At Edinburgh, 12 July 1695, anent the draft of an act given in and presented to his majesty's high commissioner and the estates of parliament by several of the inhabitants within the bounds of the synod of Argyll, as is after deduced: Our sovereign lord, considering that several of the inhabitants within the bounds of the synod of Argyll and Isles are very refractory in paying to the chamberlains and factors the rents of the bishoprics of Argyll and the Isles, which now his majesty has been graciously pleased to bestow upon erecting of English schools for rooting out of the Irish language, and other pious uses within the said synod during his majesty's pleasure, and that the distance and inaccessibleness of these bounds renders legal execution not only difficult but ineffectual for bringing in of these rents, therefore, his majesty, with advice and consent of the estates of parliament, statutes and ordains that military assistance shall be given to the factors and chamberlains, either already appointed or to be appointed, for gathering in the rents of the said bishoprics, to quarter for the said rents upon such as shall delay to pay in due time, in the same manner as quartering is allowed by law for cess and public dues, or to be assisting to the poinding and caption to be used for the said rents, and appoints the commander in chief to order the said assistance, and it be used on the charges of the persons liable. Upon reading of which act his majesty's high commissioner and the said estates of parliament did upon the day and date of this act recommend and hereby recommend to the lords of privy council to fall upon such methods as might make the payment of the above rents effectual upon the charges of the persons liable in payment.
